A protest by the Franciscan friar, Rosa Figueroa, against efforts to extinguish the Indian languages, which had culminated in a report of Archbishop Lorenzana to Charles III and the resultant royal decree of April 16, 1770. Incidentally includes a defense of the work of the Franciscans in America and of the cultural claims of Indians and Creoles, with lists of American-born archbishops, bishops, and other outstanding figures.
